I want a divorce…what now?

Getting divorced is a big step that leaves most people feeling confused and unsure of where to begin. Do you move out? Do you call an attorney? What about bank accounts? And Kids? Take a deep breath and focus on one thing at a time.

The first thing anyone seeking a divorce should do is to change passwords of your personal individual accounts that your spouse might have access too. Laptops, email accounts, social media accounts, etc.

Next, if it safe for you to do so, we advise talking to your spouse - let them know you want to separate and see if any basics agreements can be reached regarding living situations, kids, etc. You might find out they want one too.

So you’ve talked to your spouse and now want to move forward. Time to call an attorney. Your attorney will be your lifeline throughout the process and as such it is important to find someone you trust that shares your values. Do not be afraid to shop around! There are lots of wonderful attorneys, but not all of them will be right for you.

At this point we know you are probably feeling a little overwhelmed. Have you tried therapy? No time like the present. Remember, you don’t win any awards for not seeking help. While you’re at it, if you are overwhelmed, imagine how your kids are feeling. Time to find them someone to talk to as well.

Though your attorney can advise you more specifically on what steps to take, we recommend getting organized. Collect any important documentation you might need: paystubs, tax returns, mortgage statements, bank and credit card statements, medical records, important documents pertaining to your children, etc. Make sure you have copies of everything in a safe place, and make sure to provide these documents to your attorney.

We know this process is tough. Make sure you have a support system throughout, and an attorney you can trust.

We are here if you need help along the way.
